Baclofen future replacement
XenoPort, Inc continues the development of a new replacement for Baclofen in the treatment of spasticity. It announced signing of agreement with US Food and Drug Administration about the beginning of next phase of clinical tests of arbaclofen placarbil. This drug was known before as XP19986. In perspective it is going to replace Baclofen as a treatment of spasticity for multiple sclerosis patients. Baclofen also known under brand names Kemstro, Lioresal and Gablofen. It was developed in 1962 and now can be used not only for spasticity therapy but also in alcohol addiction therapy and treatment of some other central nervous system diseases. It provides some muscle relaxation effects what is provided useful in spasticity therapy. In addition the possibility to use Baclofen for cocaine addiction therapy is investigated. Baclofen is manufactured in many countries by many companies mostly in a generic form. XenoPort, Inc is a relatively young biopharmaceutical company, which is well known for its new product Horizant approved for use in the United States not so long time ago. The company is focused on development of internal products for treatment of central nervous system disorders including spastisity and Parkinson's disease.
Perspectives of Baclofen therapy for cirrhosis patients

A European Advisory board and Italian Ministry for University, Scientific and Technological Research sanctioned the research of baclofen therapy for alcohol addicted patients with cirrhosis. According to earlier researches using of baclofen significantly improve effectiveness of alcoholic addiction therapy for patientes without cirrotic livers. The new research and tests on patients with cirrhosis showed the encouraging results. More than 70% of subjects from test group who received baclofen achieved and maintained abstinence during 3 month treatment course. The result is much better than for subjects who received placebo. According to researchers' statements they proved that this pharmacological agent could promote abstinence and prevented new alcohol addiction even for patients with liver disease. The new results needs more testing for estimation all necessary data for clinical use but it is only question of time. Usually innonodividuals with liver diseases are excluded from baclofen therapy because of drug's influence on liver's metabolism. A new data can help to find conditions when baclofen therapy is reasonable for such type of patients.
